The Girls of Legacy Annual Spring Luncheon and Coaching Development Session brought together our students for an impactful, hands-on learning experience centered on one of the most critical life skills: communication.

Led by Cherie B. Mathews, the session focused on both verbal and non-verbal communication and how these skills directly influence opportunities, relationships, and long-term career success. Rather than a traditional lecture, the experience was intentionally designed to be interactive—grounded in practice, repetition, and real-time feedback.

Students actively engaged in exercises that challenged them to step into confidence and awareness. From building a structured 30-second introduction to practicing active listening, asking meaningful questions, and refining body language, each element of the session reinforced a powerful message: communication is not a talent—it is a skill that can be learned, practiced, and mastered.

A central theme throughout the session was simple yet transformative: “It’s not about you—it’s about them.” Students were encouraged to shift their mindset from impressing others to genuinely connecting—learning how to make people feel seen, heard, and valued.

Through guided activities, students also developed the ability to:

  • Listen with intention before speaking

  • Recognize the impact of non-verbal cues such as posture, eye contact, and presence

  • Communicate their story with clarity, purpose, and confidence

  • Navigate conversations with authenticity and professionalism

This session comes at a pivotal time for our cohort. Nearly half of our Girls of Legacy students are graduating this year with their bachelor’s degrees and preparing to pursue advanced education. Equipping them with strong communication skills ensures they are not only academically prepared—but positioned to lead, influence, and thrive in any environment they enter.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Cherie B. Mathews for investing her time, expertise, and energy into our students. Her commitment to teaching practical, lifelong skills creates a lasting impact that will extend far beyond this session.

At Girls of Legacy, we remain committed to developing confident, capable young women who are prepared not only to succeed—but to lead with purpose.
