Beyond a Scholarship: Rebuilding Alaiysha's Grandma's Home in Jamaica

Girls of Legacy is helping one of our inaugural scholars, Alaiysha, and her family rebuild her grandmother's home in Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa.
Alaiysha is a first-generation college graduate. She finished her degree this semester and is continuing her education. She earned it while carrying the weight of what her family was facing back home.
What we're doing
Hurricane Melissa badly damaged her grandmother's home. Girls of Legacy is helping fund the rebuild. So far, cement, concrete blocks, steel rebar, sand, and gravel have been delivered to the site, and work on a new foundation is underway.
Why it matters
For her grandmother, it means a stronger home rising on a new foundation, and the knowledge that her family is not facing recovery alone. Her thank-you to everyone who helped came down to three words: "We're so blessed."
For Alaiysha, it means she can keep moving forward in her education knowing her family is supported.
For Girls of Legacy, it is proof of what this program is built to do. Our investment in a young woman does not stop at tuition.
Alaiysha's perspective

Alaiysha has shared that the support gave her family hope and reassurance during a difficult time. It also showed her that Girls of Legacy is about more than scholarships. She hopes to pay it forward one day.
