Remember a Texas Icon – Ann Richards
This month in honor of celebrating Women’s History Month I get a special treat to deliver a key note address on “My rise to CEO” for the junior and senior girls attending the Ann Richards School in Austin, TX. I talk about this in my book LostGirl, growing up without any “women of influence” role models in my life or vision for becoming one, the iconic Ann Richards was the first women in power I ever saw in action – back in those days I lived in abject poverty as a single mom just trying to get off welfare and get my life straight. I first worked for Ann in 1989 when she was the State Treasurer and was running for Texas Governor. I was her executive Office receptionist and answered her phones. I had just completed my training through the JTPA program fresh off being sponsored for a welfare to work initiative, she gave me my first job as a temp in state government. Ann was bigger than life, engaging and genuinely interested in empowering women in Texas, she was also a hoot in terms of personality and humor. My first impression in those very early years in my state government career after seeing her in action was “I wonder if I could ever be like her – in charge and confident about it”. I am truly honored to visit the school again and empower and inspire the incredible young girls attending that campus on March 4!
